What does a Doula do?

What do Birth Doulas offer?

Birth Doula:

Providing the mother with emotional, physical, moral, and educational support, especially during times when the father and other close relatives are unavailable. Listening to the concerns and questions of the mother in a kind, non-judgmental way and offering the best possible advice. Providing practical support and advice to the mother after childbirth, like organizing the nursery, running errands, and assisting with breastfeeding and meal preparation. Keeping up to date on childbirth support, birthing techniques, and pre- and post-natal care by conducting research, networking with other Doulas and mothers, and attending workshops and lectures.

Postpartum Doula:

A postpartum doula focuses on help guiding mom + baby. I take care of you so you can take care of your baby. This includes processing the birth, newborn care, aid in recovery and healing, cooking restorative, nutrient-dense meals and snacks, light cleaning and helping the partner and the family. Bringing home, a new baby requires a new level of focus for all involved and I am there to support making than a easier transition.

Pregnancy:

I offer support in labor before you've arrived at your birthplace. I can give partners ideas for what to do or try to help the person in labor feel supported and surrounded with care. The role of the doula is never to take the place of husbands or partners in labor, but rather to complement and enhance their experience.  I provide support to a mother who has been put on bed rest or is experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. I provide informational, emotional, physical, and practical support in circumstances that are often stressful, confusing, and emotionally draining.

Fertility:

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical and informational support to expecting parents. But a fertility doula can also offer invaluable support during the preconception period as you try to get pregnant.  Fertility doulas provide additional support throughout the TTC process, and anyone who is trying to get pregnant may choose to work with one. But these professionals can be especially helpful if your journey to pregnancy has been challenging or is causing you stress, particularly if you are using assisted reproductive technologies like IVF.

Miscarriage:

A miscarriage doula is someone that supports, holds space, and comforts a person and their partner through the journey of miscarriage. Typically, a miscarriage doula also serves as a general pregnancy loss doula, supporting people through abortion or stillbirth, too. Here are some other benefits of a miscarriage doula:

  • Lowering the risk of developing postpartum depression and anxiety

  • Having a resource who can answer your questions about your body and the process of miscarriage.

  • Helping to ease the physical discomfort of a miscarriage.

  • Helping you feel less alone after your loss.

  • Abortion Care- Abortion and full-spectrum doulas provide informational, physical, and emotional support for people seeking abortions.

  • We are trained to comfort and validate their client, regardless of how that individual is processing the decision to have an abortion.

  • I offer a safe and private space for clients to unpack their emotions and feel less alone during a surgical procedure or at-home abortion.
